Confessions of a Cyclist: Things We All Think But Never Say

Let’s be honest. We cyclists are a unique bunch. We’ve all had moments on the saddle where we’ve questioned life, shouted at headwinds, or pretended we weren’t racing our mates up that hill. So, we thought… let’s say the quiet part out loud.

Welcome to the first in our “Cyclist Confessions” series where we spill the beans, laugh at ourselves, and prove that at Shapo, we get what it’s like to ride, sweat, suffer, and still love every second.

1. “I’m not competitive” – biggest lie we tell ourselves

We all become Tadej Pogačar when the group ride hits a hill. Admit it you’ve attacked on a ‘recovery ride’ just to prove a point.

2. That one jersey that makes us feel invincible

It’s old, probably smells like history, but when we wear it, we ride like we’ve got something to prove. It’s basically Lycra armour.

3. ‘Free speed’ is real and we’re addicted

Aero socks? Marginal gains? Ceramic bearings? YES. Will we remortgage our house for a watt? Possibly.

4. Indoor training: Pain cave or nightclub?

Some say torture chamber. We say: where the real transformation happens (and where we secretly blast the Spice Girls).

5. We talk to our bikes

“Come on girl, just one more climb.” And when we clean her? That’s love. That’s connection. That’s borderline spiritual.

6. We pretend we don’t care about stats…

…But if we set a PR, you will hear about it. “No big deal, just happened to smash my 20 minute power by 14 watts today.”
